A Doula Does the Following Things:
- Believes that birth is an experience that will be remembered forever.
- Knows the physiology of labor and birth and how to emotionally support a mother in labor.
- Aids in preparing and carrying out the birth plans of a woman and her partner.
- Compliments the efforts of the mother's chosen birth team- does not take the place of the father/family/friend support structure.
- Gives continuous support both emotionally and physically to the laboring mother throughout the entire birth.
- Offers non-biased information in hopes of helping the mother reach informed decisions about her care.
A Doula Does NOT Do the Following Things:
- Does not perform clinical tasks, such as blood pressure, fetal heart checks, vaginal exams, or other medical procedure that fall under the legal definition of practicing medicine.
- Does not provide information, dosages or advise concerning prescription or alternative medication, or medical advice pertaining to you or your baby.
- Does not make decisions for you. Your doula will help you get the information necessary to make an informed decision. Your doula will also remind you if there is a departure from your Birth Plan.
- Does not speak to the staff on your behalf. Your doula will discuss your concerns with you and suggest options, but you or your partner will speak on your behalf to the clinical staff.
